Some pieces of clothing are simply too precious to part with. A favourite shirt, dress, cardigan or dressing gown can hold so many memories of the person who once wore it.
A memory bear made from a loved one’s clothing offers a beautiful way to preserve those memories, transforming treasured fabric into something that can be held, displayed and passed down through the family.
What is a memory bear?
A memory bear is a teddy bear individually handmade using clothing or fabric that has a special meaning to you.
Here at Minster Lovell Bears, I make each memory bear personally in my shepherd’s hut workshop in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds. Every bear is completely individual because every piece of clothing — and the story behind it — is different.
Before cutting anything, I carefully consider how best to use the fabric. Pockets, buttons, patterns and other little details can sometimes be incorporated into the finished bear, helping to retain something of the original garment.

What clothes can be made into a memory bear?
Memory bears can be created from many different garments, including shirts, dresses, cardigans, dressing gowns, uniforms and baby clothes. Several pieces of clothing can also be combined into one bear.
They don’t only have to be bereavement bears. Children’s outgrown clothes, a wedding outfit or another treasured piece of fabric can all become wonderful keepsakes.
Handmade with care
I make my bears using traditional teddy bear-making techniques, including cotter-pin joints, glass eyes and hand-stitched noses. Careful weighting and facial shaping help give every Minster Lovell Bear its own character and expression.
Personal details such as a name, initials or date can also be embroidered onto your bear.
Sending irreplaceable clothing away to be cut can understandably feel daunting, particularly when it belonged to someone you have lost. I never forget the trust involved in receiving those garments, and they are treated with great care and respect throughout the making process.
A keepsake made especially for you
For me, creating a memory bear isn’t simply about turning an old garment into something new. It is about preserving part of its story.
Something that might otherwise remain tucked away in a wardrobe can become a beautiful handmade bear that you can see, hold and treasure for years to come.
